I’ve been dieting for the past month, and have discovered that I really don’t know much about dieting. I keep track of everything on the My Fitness Pal app on my iPhone and am very good about recording EVERYTHING I eat, including little tastes. I even try to overestimate what I’m eating because I know that most people tend to underestimate, and hopefully I’m getting close to the real amount. My major focus has been on controlling portion size.

A little about me: I’m a 21 year old college student, 5’6″ and weighing, at last check 164 lbs. I’d love to go down to 145. I’m a vegetarian and in addition to walking about a mile a day to and from classes, up and down lots of stairs, I’m a competitive waterskiier, and ski about 1-4 times per week. According to My Fitness Pal, I’ve averaged about 1300-1400 calories per day for the past month.

The problem is, I’m not losing any weight. I even feel like I’m gaining some! I don’t have a scale, but I have stepped on a friend’s scale twice, and between 5/5 and 5/12, I gained a pound.

I’ve noticed that I eat a high fat diet, despite trying very hard not to. I try to eat “healthy” foods, including lots of veggies, whole grains (about 80% of the time), and tons of beans and tofu. I do eat dairy products, but don’t usually buy them since they tend to go bad before I can finish them. I enjoy cooking when there are not too many ingredients (and on a college student budget!). I also eat a lot of avocados (favorite food!), but no more than one per day.

Do you guys have any suggestions for how to cut out fat from my diet? Or suggestions of low-fat snacks and meals I can make? Or do you see a different problem in my diet that I could fix? I really appreciate all your help!
